Pet owners have a lot of options today when they travel without their family companions. It used to be the only choices were kenneling at the vet or the kid down the street, but now there are fun pet “hotels” and spas and pet sitters who can stay at home with them.

Dogs, in particular, may love the playrooms and outdoor spaces at luxury kennels, but I think home is the best place for them. Pets love routine, and a pet sitter who comes to live with them for a spell can easily keep them on schedule. They can sleep in their favorite spots, eat from their own bowls, go for their usual daily walks and enjoy their usual treats.

Anxious pets as well as older ones will be comfortable at home, which can reduce stress. And they will bond with a regular pet sitter and be happy to see them. That’s what happens with me, anyway!

The other good thing about in-home pet care is they won’t be exposed to any new illnesses or stressors. While most dogs enjoy socializing and playing with other dogs, rescues and anxious or just shy dogs find it stressful. Even the cleanest, most well-managed boarding facilities can be breeding grounds for, say, kennel cough or parasites.

A pet sitter also can focus on your pet’s needs. I’m a fulltime pet sitter, for example, so I don’t have the distractions of other jobs or kids. My whole job is to spend quality time with your dog, cat, reptile, pony, guinea pig, et al! And I don’t have to divide my attention between multiple pets, as in a kennel setting.

Staying at home means no sudden changes in environment or routine, which can spark depression, aggression or even a regression in potty training.

It’s great to have someone staying in your house, too, while your away. Pet visits can help your house seem occupied; overnights pet sits ensure that it is occupied. I also can water plants, bring in the mail, accept deliveries, be there for any service appointments and generally run your house the way you would!
