Summer! The season of sunshine, long walks, and outdoor adventures. While we humans slather on sunscreen and grab our shades, it’s crucial to remember our furry companions need extra care to stay safe and comfortable during these warmer months.

Ms. Stacy has some essential tips to help you and your pet enjoy a fantastic, worry-free summer. If you’re going on vacation without your pet, remember Ms. Stacy’s Pet Care provides excellent summer pet sitting, following all the tips below.

1. Hydration is Key!

Just like us, pets can get dehydrated quickly in the heat.

  • Fresh Water, Always: Ensure your pet has constant access to fresh, cool water. Consider multiple water bowls in different locations, especially if you have a larger home or multiple pets.
  • On the Go: When out for walks or adventures, always bring a portable water bowl and a bottle of water for your pet.
  • Cool Treats: Some pets enjoy ice cubes in their water or even pet-safe frozen treats!

2. Beat the Heat: Timing is Everything

The midday sun can be brutal for pets.

  • Walk Wisely: Schedule walks and vigorous playtime for the cooler parts of the day – early morning or late evening.
  • Pavement Alert! Asphalt and dark surfaces can get incredibly hot and burn your pet’s paw pads. Ms. Stacy advises the “seven-second rule”: If you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Stick to grassy areas or use protective booties.
  • Shady Spots: Ensure your pet has access to shade when outdoors, whether it’s a tree, a covered patio, or a pet sunshade.

3. NEVER Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

This cannot be stressed enough. Even on a seemingly mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket to dangerous levels within minutes, even with the windows cracked. It’s a life-threatening risk. If you’re running errands, leave your pet safe and cool at home–it’s the kindest choice.

4. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke can be fatal. Familiarize yourself with the signs:

  • Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
  • Increased heart and respiratory rate
  • Drooling
  • Mild weakness, stumbling, or even collapse
  • Seizures
  • Bloody diarrhea or vomiting
  • Elevated body temperature (over 104 degrees Fahrenheit)

If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and apply cool, wet towels to their body (especially the groin, armpits, and neck). Contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic immediately.

5. Parasite Patrol

Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes (which can transmit heartworm).

  • Prevention is Best: Talk to your veterinarian about the best parasite prevention products for your pet. As professionals like Ms. Stacy know, consistent prevention is far easier than dealing with an infestation.
  • Regular Checks: After walks, especially in grassy or wooded areas, check your pet thoroughly for ticks.

6. Grooming for Comfort

  • Brushing: Regular brushing helps remove loose fur, which can improve air circulation to the skin and keep your pet cooler.
  • Haircuts (with caution): For some long-haired breeds, a summer trim can help. However, never shave a double-coated breed (like Huskies or Golden Retrievers) without consulting your vet or a professional groomer. Their coat actually helps insulate them from both heat and cold.

7. Safe Summer Fun

  • Water Safety: If your pet enjoys swimming, ensure they do so safely. Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Introduce them to water gradually, use a pet life vest, and never leave them unsupervised near pools, lakes, or the ocean. Rinse them off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt.
  • Travel Smart: If summer plans include travel, ensure your pet is safely secured in the car, has all their essentials (food, water, medications, familiar toys), and that your destination is pet-friendly.

Summer with your pet can be a season full of joy and unforgettable moments. By taking these precautions, you can ensure your beloved companion stays happy, healthy, and safe all summer long!
